Biography

Bringing experience in education and parenting to the front line of support

She has at least ten years of experience in elementary education, supporting not only children’s learning but also their daily lives and growth.

As a mother of two, she has also developed the perspectives of both an educator and a parent supporting their children’s growth.

At the same time, working under Takanobu Sugiura — who has been involved in support for school refusal, high-school dropout and hikikomori for at least 40 years — she has learned from many support cases and accumulated practical knowledge, including how to build trust with young people and how to help them begin engaging with society.

Today at JADA, she is involved in outreach (home-visit support) and other work with children and young people experiencing school refusal or hikikomori.

Support Approach

Being someone they can talk to

What matters most to her in support is first building a relationship of trust with the young person.

Rather than adults deciding the answer and pushing the young person along, she values listening to them and thinking together about what they can do now and what they might be able to do next.

“I’m reassured that my child seems able to tell Ms. Sugiura things they can’t tell us as parents.”

Daily Life & Social Autonomy

From establishing daily routines to building connections with society

Support is not aimed only at returning to school.

  1. 01

    Establishing daily routines

During home visits, she sometimes checks together with the young person how to take out the garbage, or thinks with them about recipes they can cook when living alone.

  2. 02

    Building connections with society

She also helps children and young people who aren’t attending school to look for part-time jobs and write their résumés, creating new connections with society.

  3. 03

Building the ability to act on their own

She aims for young people to get their daily lives in order, think and act for themselves, and gradually build their connections with society.

She values working alongside each person toward Social Autonomy, JADA’s goal.
